This is the story of a young neuroanatomist who suffers a stroke at the age of 37. From her unique training and experience, she is able to follow along as her left hemisphere reels under the damage and gradually closes down. Fortunately, Dr. Taylor survives, and shares the story of a long rehabilitation that eventually leads to her full recovery. Toward the end of the book, she shares how the experience has changed her personality and understanding of the human brain, both in health and in illness. Her writing style is somewhat euphoric, rosy and optimistic throughout, and I questioned whether I would agree with her that a stroke could be a “good” thing, even if it did lead to new and different thought patterns. I don’t want to have one to find out!
