I hate New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps my dislike is a result of typical resolutions being motivated by guilt or regret. I’ve gained ten pounds since the summer and resolve to lose weight. I indulged in too much egg nog and sugar cookies over the holidays and therefore resolve to join a gym. If, like me, you would like to choose a more positive project for the new year, how about deciding to learn something new courtesy of Universal Class? Classes are free for DBRL patrons – all you need is your library card and some time.
Universal Class offers hundreds of online, self-paced courses taught by actual instructors who communicate with you via email and evaluate your progress. These aren’t simply online tutorials or videos – they are much richer continuing education courses in everything from accounting and real estate to cooking and crafting. Resolve to learn something new in the New Year:
- Digital photography
- How to create web pages
- Accounting and bookkeeping
- Meditation 101
- Dog training (because Fido needs some self-improvement, too!)
- Soap making
- Music appreciation
- Feng shui
- And much more!
If you feel you absolutely must focus on fitness, there are even offerings on weight training, yoga and weight loss management. As for me, I think I’ll perfect my pie baking! That’s a sweet resolution I can live with.
