Three Raging Fires and Order No. 11

Columbia Public Library, Friends Room

Four days after the Quantrill assault on Lawrence, Kansas, Union General Thomas Ewing issued General Order No. 11, which forced the evacuation of the rural areas of four border counties. Tom A. Rafiner, author of “Caught Between Three Fires,” will talk about the “uncivil war, intimate, cruel, and total” that occurred along the Missouri-Kansas border. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Bingham and Civil War Missouri

Columbia Public Library, Friends Room

George Caleb Bingham’s famous painting “General Order No. 11″ gives us insight into the chaotic and violent atmosphere of Civil War era Missouri. Dr. Joan Stack, art curator at the State Historical Society of Missouri, will discuss the painting and Bingham’s role in the debates over slavery and secession during the 1840s-1870s.
